Fiona Avatar
Born in Vancouver BC, Fiona Bowie attended the University of British Columbia (B.F.A. 1990) and Simon Fraser Univ. (M.F.A. 1998). Fiona Bowie works with superimposition of time/still based media and sculpture to create narrative works that address subjectivity, the experience of time and consciousness. She is known for her 360 degree immersive environments and for the creation of unique image systems in the realization of her work. In the fall of 2009, Fiona debuted Flow (with Computer Scientist Sidney Fels), the first ever video/photography- based permanent public art installation in Vancouver located at the new Civic Centre at 1 Kingsway. This piece also has an interactive web component at flow1kingsway.com that Fiona created so that viewers can add dialogue to the ever-changing scenes and view the work 24 hours a day from anywhere. (City of Vancouver Public Art Commision) In 2010, Fiona created Surface (surfacer.ca), an ongoing, 24hr. documentary of the underwater life of false creek that streams live on the internet and on a giant LED screen on False Creek, Vancouver. (City of Vancouver Public Art Commision) Exhibitions include Western Front Gallery; Yukon Arts Centre; Open Space Gallery; Belkin Satellite Gallery, Vancouver; the International New Media Symposium; New Forms Festival, Presentation House Gallery; These Days, Vancouver Art Gallery; She has exhibited in the U.S. and Europe including Seattle, Brussels and Prague. Fiona’s musical endeavours include her latest project as singer, songwriter (with Jim Peers) Slickerslacker – , Songroom (2006), and as bass player and singer for Chopper.
