The State University of New York at Oswego seeks an exceptional leader to become Dean of its highly regarded School of Communication, Media, and the Arts, a school that provides students with unparalleled authentic learning opportunities in the departments of Art, Communication Studies, Music and Theatre. Our future Dean should be a nationally recognized artist, broadcast professional or scholar whose active and distinguished professional record includes some combination of performance or creative work, teaching, research, and leadership in the arts, communications or media.

Description of Responsibilities: The Dean represents the accomplishments, aspirations and needs of the faculty, staff and students to the administration, other schools, and the greater community; the Dean also communicates the goals, concerns and needs of the administration, other schools and the community to the faculty, staff and students of the School of Communication, Media and the Arts (SCMA).

Responsible for 12 academic programs, the Dean supports and cultivates the faculty and enhances resources required for the successful implementation of these programs. The Dean will oversee the academic programs, personnel, and services of the college; promote academic excellence, innovations, and continuous improvements; support faculty recruitment, development and evaluation; manage budgets; oversee facilities, including major renovations currently underway, and equipment purchases; collaborate with other university administrators to represent the institution; provide leadership in external relations, partnership-building, and fundraising. The Dean is expected to take positive action that supports the educational goals associated with a diverse student body, faculty, and curriculum, and to be attentive and committed to shared governance. The ability to nurture and embrace the extramural roles that the arts, communication and media play in communities, local and global, is key to success in this position.

Required Qualifications:
1. A terminal degree or a master’s degree with commensurate professional experience in a department or interdisciplinary program of the School of Communication, Media, and the Arts.
2. A strong record of accomplishments at the level of department chair or beyond in a department or interdisciplinary program of the School of Communication, Media, and the Arts.
3. Experience with, or working knowledge of, higher education in the arts and/or communication studies.
4. Demonstrated commitment to the future with regard to advancing School programs including, for example, cross-departmental collaborations, cutting-edge technologies, online learning, the business of arts and communications, fieldwork and internship/mentoring programs.
5. A commitment to creating and promoting multi- and interdisciplinary programs, global awareness, and community engagement programs.
6. Experience with student-faculty collaborative research and creative activities.
7. Administrative experience that includes, for example, strategic planning; program development, accreditation, and assessment; personnel supervision and evaluation; budget management; facilities renovation planning & oversight.
8. Experience promoting diversity, for example, in student recruitment, faculty hiring, or curriculum development and research.
9. Excellent communication and listening skills, a collaborative leadership style, and a commitment to shared governance.
10. A commitment to learner-centered public higher education and the goal of cultivating critically engaged practitioners in a wide variety of fields.
11. A commitment to building external and alumni relations in support of student and faculty opportunities, program development, and facilities planning.
12. Demonstrated ability in grant writing and fundraising.

Description of the School: The School of Communication, Media and the Arts (SCMA) is Oswego’s newest school and offers innovative degree opportunities in the departments of Art, Communication Studies, Music and Theatre. SCMA boasts 12 undergraduate and graduate programs, more than 1100 students and 100 full and part-time faculty, many with national and international standing in their fields. The School is beginning an $18 million renovation in our fine arts building, which will house new studios and exhibit space for the visual arts and
performance space for Theater and Music, complementing existing state-of-the-art studios for media and broadcasting programs. The school offers a rich selection of classes in all areas of visual art, music, theatre, communication and broadcasting, journalism, graphic design and related media. Programs emphasize project-based, hands-on learning and faculty working side-by-side with students in an exciting atmosphere of inquiry. The school supports Oswego’s vibrant campus arts scene with performances and shows by college faculty and students, as well as well-known visiting artists. Student-run media organizations such as WTOP10TV, WNYO 88.9 radio, the Oswegonian newspaper, and clubs in art, graphic design, music, theater and PR and communication give students many outlets for their creative talents. Alumni have gone on to gain national and international prominence in the arts, in media and in business. Art, music and theatre programs are all accredited by their respective national organizations. The Princeton Review and Academy of Television Arts and Sciences list Oswego’s programs in broadcasting, public relations and graphic design among the best in the United States.
