Ferris State University seeks an experienced, energetic, and creative leader to serve as its next Dean of the College of Education and Human Services. The College enrolls over 2,100 undergraduates and over 140 graduate students across several units:

  • The School of Criminal Justice offers law enforcement, corrections and generalist programs, and a master’s degree in criminal justice administration.
  • The School of Education offers early childhood, elementary, secondary, and vocations teacher preparation programs and graduate programs in curriculum instruction, special needs, career and technical education, and leadership.
  • The School of Digital Media has programs in television and digital media production, digital animation and game design, and digital media software engineering.

Ferris State University is positioned in a prime attraction area in mid-Michigan. The 935-acre main campus is located in the city of Big Rapids, a small, scenic community of approximately 10,600 residents. The blending of arts and recreation in the vibrant, historic downtown district of Big Rapids offers residents and students alike a welcoming place to live and work. Big Rapids/Mecosta County, with its green rolling hills, numerous golf courses, trails, beautiful lakes and waterways, has something for everyone to enjoy. Grand Rapids – Michigan’s second largest city – is an hour south of Big Rapids and offers fabulous dining, cultural and shopping experiences. Lake Michigan beaches, Traverse City wineries, and numerous ski resorts are additional nearby attractions. Big Rapids is also conveniently located just a few hours from Chicago and Detroit.
Duties

Essential duties of the Dean include:

  • Direct and coordinate the activity of directors/chairs/department heads within the College.
  • Collaborate with administrative leadership, faculty and staff to implement programs and services that advance the University’s mission and achieve the College’s goals.
  • Develop and manage the budget for the College of Education and Human Services.
  • Advise the University Provost on academic matters, such as accreditation, development and evaluation of academic programs, budget and personnel.
  • Maintain compliance with all accreditation standards and policies applicable to the College.
  • Manage the staff, faculty, and administrative leadership for the College of Education and Human Services. This includes the following activities related to management of the faculty and staff within the College: support effective communication; oversee performance evaluation; promote development opportunities; supervise hiring processes, and analyze and report personnel problems.
  • Support faculty in program planning, evaluation, and curriculum development.
  • Working with the University’s Advancement Office, develop external funding sources for support of College scholarships, instructional initiatives and research activities.
  • Facilitate maintenance and modification of physical facilities and information technology infrastructure of the College in collaboration with existing University services (Physical Plant Department, Informational Technology Department).
  • Maintain a contemporary understanding of higher education best practices and trends through regular attendance and participation in seminars and conferences related to areas of responsibilities.
  • Represent the College and its three schools in regional, national and international forums.

Marginal duties of the Dean include:

  • Serve and/or chair various University and community committees.

Responsibilities, Skills and Abilities

  • Ensure that the academic mission of the College is carried out using available resources.
  • Provide leadership for the College’s three Schools through direct supervision of School Directors.
  • Guide programmatic expansion on campus and at the College’s multiple off-campus locations throughout the State.
  • Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with University policies and applicable laws.
  • Report directly to the Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs.
  • Maintain the confidentiality of designated information.
  • Supervise the faculty and staff of the College of Education and Human Services.

 

Qualifications

Required qualifications for the position include:

  • A Ph.D, Ed.D or other terminal degree. The degree area needs to align with or enhance the areas of academic emphasis in the College of Education and Human Services.
  • Five years of demonstrated leadership and management experience in higher education that include supervisory responsibility for teaching, scholarship and related activities.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a large and diverse faculty and staff.
  • Evidence of comprehensive administrative skills including communication, supervision and budget management.

Preferred qualifications for the position include:

  • Sustained record of recent administrative experience in higher education at or above the rank of department chair or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated record of successful external fund-raising efforts.
  • Experience with building a student-centered learning environment, both as an instructor and as an administrator.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing a culture that supports and values the scholarship of teaching and learning.
