From Start to Finish: The creative and practical needs of a successful media project
Wednesday, November 4, 10 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. (hour lunch on your own)
AJ Studio Room, Ball State University
From conception to delivery, every media project goes through numerous tools, software packages, and file formats before it’s done. What do you use? Where do you begin? How do you manage it all? Do you use technology that exists? Do you wait for something untested around the corner? Do you use an older proven technology? How do you deal with copyright issues? Intellectual policy issues? Most importantly, how do you maintain clarity of creative vision when multiple people are working on your project?
In this workshop, we will look at two case studies: an interactive movie that is now an award winning iPhone app and a billboard based on “free” technology. We will also discuss the Digital Corps, an award winning innovative educational program. We will examine how it works and how it allowed students an unparalleled immersive learning opportunity with a high success rate after graduation.
Starting from scratch, we will discuss various project management methods based on size, skill, and education of the workforce. We will examine each step, including selection of technology, budgeting, scheduling, recruiting the correct personnel, testing and deployment. We will also discuss how technology has improved since the completion of each project and what we could do differently if we were to do it again. We will also discuss how best to stay on top of the latest technology and trends.
By the end of this workshop, you will have concrete steps to apply to your own projects and a comprehensive overview of available technology, from free “cloud” services to top-of-the-line gear.
