GLITCH IS THE SOUL IN THE MACHINE

IDMAA EXHIBITION 2021

Call to Artists for Entry

GLITCH IS THE SOUL IN THE MACHINE is an international exhibition showcasing emergent forms of new media art that playfully reveal the way digital technologies influence our perception of reality even as they corrupt the practice of everyday life. If, as conference exhibition curator Mark Amerika suggests in his “Glitch Ontology” manifesto-performance, “Glitch is the soul in the machine,” then how do works of contemporary art reveal what is broken, dysfunctional, hacked and cracked in our information-saturated culture?

We welcome proposals for artwork that use digital processes to experiment in hybrid forms of intermedia art including but not limited to digital visual art, digital photography, digital video, digital design, digital sound, Internet (net) art, 3-D printing and/or fabrication, electronic literature, transmedia narrative, interactive / multimedia installation, mobile computing, VR/AR, and works influenced by artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML). The GLITCH IS THE SOUL IN THE MACHINE exhibition coincides with the annual International Digital Media and Arts Association (iDMAa) conference, to be held on the campus of Winona State University in Winona, Minnesota, from June 24-27, 2021.

GLITCH IS THE SOUL IN THE MACHINE will exhibit both emerging and established artists whose creative work engages with new media technologies while reflecting on our current “digital condition” and the psychological obsolescence that accompanies our desire for what is new and purely functional. This year’s conference theme is also BROKEN MEDIA. See the “Call for Papers” for more information on our theme.
